Salley builds Porter-Gaud program into one of SCISA’s best

CHARLESTON – Larry Salley found his way to the track by way of a compromise.

“I went out for (high school) track because I was skinny and uncoordinated and nearsighted, and there was no ball I could drop,” said the Porter-Gaud High graduate.

That was nearly 30 years ago. Now, Salley is Porter-Gaud’s track coach and his school is preparing to host this year’s SCISA state meet this weekend.

“I ran track all four years at Porter-Gaud,” Salley recently told scrunners.com. “I ran cross-country from my sophomore through senior years, but I was never very good.”

As a sophomore, Salley was on the 1985 Porter-Gaud team that won the SCHSL Class A state championship, a group that still holds fond memories for him.

“I still remember how neat it was to be a part of that great team, even though I wasn’t yet able to contribute.”
