Wando’s Waring out of 100, but hopes to top impressive freshman long jump

MOUNT PLEASANT – Wando High sophomore Kenny Waring will be at this weekend’s SCHSL state track championships, returning to compete in the long jump. 

A year ago, the then freshman came out of nowhere to place second in the event with a leap of 23-9, which at the time was the best jump in the country by a high school freshman.

Perhaps more impressively, Waring won the 100-meters last year, topping a more experienced field with a time of 10.70.  But, a disappointing performance at last weekend’s Class AAAA qualifier at Spring Valley means the sophomore won’t be defending that title on Saturday when the top sprinters meet at Lower Richland.

“Kenny didn’t have a good day in the sprints,” his coach Kevin Shiver told scrunners.com earlier this week. “But, he will be competing in the long jump.”

Shiver said after last year’s long jump, he’s looking forward to watching Waring compete this weekend.
