Name: James Palmer, III
Hobbies: Basketball, golf and hanging with friends
Academic interest: History
Personal bests: 5K-16:15

What does it mean to be named to the Shrine Bowl Run team and helping the hospital?

I am extremely honored to be named to the Shrine Bowl Run team.  Making the Shrine Bowl Run team has been my ultimate goal since the end of last cross country season. Therefore, I am humbled by this honor and always willing to help someone in need.

What did you hear about the Shrine Bowl Run before this year?

Prior to this year I  knew that the Shrine Bowl Run was an All Star team of South Carolina Cross Country runners who participate in a ceremonial run which consists of running a football to the Shrine Bowl football game. As well as one of my former teammates Mike Lantz participated last year.

What do you hope to experience on Dec. 20?

I hope to have an experience that I will remember for a life time.

How are you preparing to run with a football?

I have not practiced running with a football, but I don’t think it will be too hard.

How would you rate your senior season?

I would rate my senior season as an eight due to the fact that I finished short of my primary goal, All State. However, I am satisfied with our team finish this year.

What future goals do you have?

I would like to complete my high school career and continue my education at an institution of higher learning. I also hope to have a successful injury free season of track and run well at Foot Locker on November 29.

Have you made the decision to compete at the next level? Please explain.

Yes, I am planning to compete at the collegiate level. Several schools have expressed an interest in me; however, I have not made a decision where I will run at this time.

How did you get involved with the sport and when?

It was during my sophomore year of playing basketball that my head coach strongly suggested that run track during the spring season. As a result I found a love for running.  For this reason I truly thank Coach Washington for exposing me to the sport of running. It has truly made an impact on my life.

Do you have any relation or know someone that has attended the Shriners Hospital?
No, I am not related to or know of anyone that has attended the Shriners Hospital.

How have you seen the sport change in the state? Please explain.

It is hard for me to determine if the sport has change considering this is my second year running cross country. I have noticed that over the years the competition has increased and each year the runners are setting the bar higher and higher.

What was your motivation for your final XC season?

My team came into the season with something to prove.  We lost our top runner Mike Lantz due to graduation and it was clear that most of the state had counted us out for this season because we lost such a tremendous asset. Being considered an underdog served as motivation for my team.

If there is one thing in the world you could do, what would it be and why?

I was born in Seoul Korea; however, I was only there for six weeks after birth. Therefore, the one thing I would like to do is travel overseas to see the world and experience different cultures.
