2006 state cross country Class AAAA state champion Mauldin Mavericks girls are ranked no. 5 in the Nike Team Nationals southeast region preseason poll, released last week. Senior Alyssa Kulik captured the individual state cross country title in 2006.
The Mavericks open the season Aug. 25 at the Providence Invitational, held at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.

7. Oak Ridge XC Club (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) -- State 3A runner-up returns 6 of 7 after excellent track season
8. Tatnall XC Club (Tatnall, Del.) -- State Div II champ w/18 pts loses 3 of 5 but state winner Julie Bottorff leads solid group
9. Nokesville XC Club (Brentsville, Va.) -- State 2A runner-up has 5 of 7 back
10. Springfield Xc Club (West Springfield, Va.) -- State 3A 5th-placer returns 5 scorers with 48-sec spread
