Samuel Denmark looks to help Hanahan defend state title

How did you get involved in the sport and why?
In my seventh grade year is when I first started, I didn't really think much of track when I first heard about it but I spoke with my dad and he told me that even if i didn't like it that it could help improve my speed a lot.

How have you seen it change?
I've seen it change a lot! When I first came out for track I was one if/the youngest on the team. Luckily for me that was the year that we won the state! Ever since then, with me being a seventh grader having a state championship under my belt, and being just as fast as some high schoolers I noticed others start to see that track might be the key to being faster and winning as well.

How do you feel you have grown in the sport?
I feel that mentally and physically that I have matured and found myself to be one of the leaders on this team being that I've been a member of the team the longest.

What has been your motivation for this season?
Motivation for me this season is trying to repeat as team state champions and just doing my absolute best in all my events to finish at the top or the best way I know we/I can.

What does it mean to you to be ranked no. 1 in both the 100 and 200 in the state?
It means a lot to me knowing I am because instead of me being the one chasing after the top guy, its me in both events being chased by everyone else in all classifications.

How do you look at the rankings?
Rankings don't really bother me because in most cases it doesn't mean anything until its all over.

What goes throughout your mind as the gun is getting ready to go as you are waiting in the blocks?
Stay relaxed, you've been here before and get out!

Do you have a prerace tradition? Please explain.
I do actually. I warm up of course. Mingle around and talk to my teammates see how they are doing in their events or give them pep talks just to get clear and relax my mind and then lastly I pray.

How would you rate your season so far?
On a scale of 1-10 I would rate my season as an 8.

Do you have any family members involved in the sport? Please explain.
I did last year, my older cousin Kahlim Denmark ran. He is now is running for Coastal Carolina.

What challenges have you encountered in the sport?
Earlier in the season I got frustrated with myself because I wasn't hitting the times I wanted due to just not really getting enough rest and taking care of my body.

Have you ever been injured? Please explain.
Yes, multiple of times. One main injury I will always remember is in my ninth grade season. I missed track season due to a broken knee injury from basketball season that year.

What do you hope to achieve in the sport and in life in the future?
I've achieved a lot from this sport and have learned so much about it. One other thing I can say is that I hope I achieve is to get others to love and take the sport just as serious as I did coming into it. In life I just hope to be a positive role model for others.

Do you have post season track plans?
After track I will be going right into football.

What is your favorite workout and why?
10, 10, 10s is the workout. It helps improves my intensity and relaxation in a race.

What goals do have you set for the rest of the season?
My goals the season season include improving my times, building team chemistry and winning the Class AAA state championship.

Looking at the 2014 state meet, what do you remember and how did that make you prepare for the 2015 state meet?
The one thing about 2014 state meet I will always remember is hearing the announcer say is "And your 2014 boys Class AAA state champions...Hanahan High school!" It automatically put a sign in my head thinking that we can repeat with the guys we had coming back.

If there is one thing in the world you could do, what it would it be and why?
I wouldn't mind going pro in track or football and just being able to give back to those who have supported me throughout life and my athletic career.
