Interesting fact: My dad didn't want me to hurdle in the seventh grade because he said I was too short. Surprisingly I grow to be 6'3" which has helped to improve my overall performance.
How did you get involved in the sport and why?
I watched my sister hurdle when I was in sixth grade. That really sparked my interest in the sport. That's when I fell in love with hurdling.
How have you seen it change?
The training aspects of the sport hasn't really change, just minor techniques that I have incorporated to improve my speed.
How do you feel you have grown in the sport?
I have grown physically and more importantly mentally.
What has been your motivation for this season?
Every year I set goals and work toward those goals. This year's goals where to go sub-14 and become no. 1 in the nation.
How do you look at the rankings?
When looking at rankings, I get a feel for who's on top and that motivates me to consistently get better each week.
What goes throughout your mind as the gun is getting ready to go as you are waiting in the blocks or starting line?
I try to keep a clear mind and just focus on the sound of the gun.
Do you have a pre race tradition? Please explain.
I have a routine that I follow on every meet day for mental purposes. Usually I start by doing a 15 minute jog to get my muscles going, then I follow up with some good agilities.
How would you rate your season so far?
I don't have a scale for my performances, but I would say I feel as though I'm having a good season.
Do you have any family members involved in the sport? Please explain.
My dad and mom where both high school coaches before becoming school administrators. They provide an abundance of insight on the sport and life.
What challenges have you encountered in the sport?
Injuries are a big challenge to overcome in track, because tight muscles really affect performances.
Have you ever been injured? Please explain.
Yes. I had a torn back muscle during my sophomore track season, which was a result from growing too fast and having tight hamstrings.
What do you hope to achieve in the sport and in life in the future?
My goal is to be a top hurdler on the next level and in processes obtain a good college education.
Do you have post season track plans?
Once my high school track season is over, I will be working towards New Balance and Junior Worlds before my collegiate career begins. Last week, I signed a National Letter of Intent to attend North Carolina A & T University in Greensboro, N.C.
What is your favorite workout and why?
My quick step workouts because I love hurdling and they really help with my leg speed.
What goals have you set for the rest of the season?
To finish my season healthy and to break the state record in the 110-meter hurdles (Norman Greene (Sumter) 1991, 13.65) this weekend at the state meet.
Looking at the 2014 state meet, what do you remember and how did that make you prepare for the 2015 state meet?
I remember having a bad start in the 110 hurdles and I really wanted to focus on getting out and beating everyone to the first hurdle.
If there is one thing in the world you could do, what it would it be and why?
Be an Olympic gold medalist, because that's my dream and ultimately the big goal
