Ex-Daniel coach Sullivan joins staff at Calhoun Falls Charter

Former Daniel coach and SCTCCCA Hall of Fame member Ron Sullivan is now coaching and teaching at Calhoun Falls Charter School in Abbeville County, the former Lions coach told scrunners.com Thursday morning.

Calhoun Falls is a second-year Class A member of the South Carolina High School League.

Sullivan was on TERI in Pickens County, he said in early June.

"My goals never change," said Sullivan. "I do the best I can and plan to win region and state."

Calhoun Falls started a cross country program last season with eight kids. Sullivan said he will know Aug. 10 if there is any interest for the upcoming season.

"But, we will have track," said Sullivan. "I've never been in Class A...I'm sort of excited."

Sullivan, who coached at Ninety Six, Belton-Honea Path and Daniel since 1984, has won nine state titles combined. Sullivan has won 41 region titles, finished third in state six times and second in state 11 times.

"Ron’s impact on our cross country program will be hard to replace," said Daniel athletic director Dusty Oates. "He continually had his teams peaked for the post season.  He always seemed to know when to push his runners and when to back off some.  He will be truly missed."

Oates told scrunners.com Brock Bailey is the new girls cross country coach.

"I have no regrets and appreciate the opportunity they (Daniel) gave me," said Sullivan. "I definitely left their program in better shape than I found it. This season both teams will be strong title contenders and may be favored in track...and yes that is the division (Class AAA) Mann has owned."

Interview with Brock Bailey
scrunners: What does it mean to you to be named head coach?
bailey: I am excited about the opportunity to coach the ladies at Daniel.  I have inherited a group of strong and experienced runners and am hoping we can continue the success of this program.

I have been the Daniel boys assistant cross country coach for the past three years and will continue to serve in that capacity as well.

scrunners: What does it mean to come into a program as head with what Ron has achieved with the team?
bailey: The Daniel cross country program has a long history of success.  Since the late 90's the Lady Lions have won five state championships and been runner-up three times.  We have been blessed to have many talented ladies come through this program and hopefully we'll continue to be successful in the future.

scrunners: What kind of goals do you have for the team this season?
bailey: My goals are simple.  I want to see each runner improve and have a positive experience as a member of this team.  The individual and team awards will take care of themselves as we work hard to improve throughout the season.
