Lander Honors Athletes Monday
Lander University honored athletes from nine varsity sports and the cheerleading team Monday (4/26/04) night at the institution\'s 36th Annual Athletics Banquet in Horne Arena.

Tiffany Fore, a native of Columbia (Dutch Fork HS) and junior member of the women's cross country team, received the Dr. Boyce M. Grier Award as the Lander student-athlete who best exemplifies sportsmanship, integrity, pride in the university and a positive attitude. Fore, the No.1 runner for the Bearcats, is a resident assistant and has served as the cross country team's representative on the Lander Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also is the student leader for Campus Outreach and a member of the South Carolina Education Association. She also serves as a volunteer for many organizations and has been on missions in Boston, Miami, Charleston and Cherokee.

The women's cross country team finished the season ranked No. 9 in the NCAA D-II South Region standings. Lander finished fourth in the Peach Belt Conference championships Oct. 24 in Atlanta, Ga.

40 teams make up the South Region.

ACC Names Clemson's Pollock Track and Field Coach of the Year
Bob Pollock, head men's track and field coach at Clemson University was named the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year as selected by the league's nine head coaches. This is Pollock's eighth ACC Outdoor Coach of the Year accolade. Pollock previously garnered the award in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997 and 1998.

The Tigers captured their ninth ACC title under Pollock in 2004.

At the 2004 meet Clemson tallied an ACC Outdoor Championship record point total of 224. The Tigers set the previous mark of 216 in 1997.

Clemson captured five event titles (100m, 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay, long jump, decathlon), and 16 Tigers earned 19 All-ACC merits. The Tigers scored in every event in which they were entered. Overall, Pollock has been named ACC Coach of the Year on 18 occasions (eight outdoor, nine indoor, one cross country).

The Clemson Lady Tigers Track and Field team finished sixth at the 2004 ACC Outdoor Championships.

Gamecock Women Win 4x400 Relay at Penn Relays on National Television
The USC women's 4x400 meter relay team won the Penn Relay on the final day of competition. The event was shown live on national television (NBC). The USC women were also runner-ups in the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x200 meter relay.

Citadel Men Win Fourth Straight 4x100 Intrepid Relay at Penn Relays
The Citadel men\'s 4x100 Intrepid Relay Squad clenched the gold medal for the fourth year in a row at the 110th Penn Relays Carnival this past weekend. The team completed the event in 41.76, a record for this season.

Three freshmen compiled the squad for the Bulldogs. Two freshman on the team are from Spartanburg and one senior (Marcus Cohen) on the squad is also from Spartanburg. Quintin Wright (Charleson/Academic Magnet), Cameron Easley (Ga.) and Thomas Pressley (Lake City/Lake City HS) make up the freshman that competed in the 4x100 event for the Citadel.

The military relay is run every year and includes West Point, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, VMI, Air Force, along with the Citadel, located in Charleston.

Coastal Carolina and Clemson also competed at the Penn Relays.

The relay hosted a record crowd of 49,491 on Saturday. Over 112,000 people saw the four-day Penn Relays carnival.
