Chris Ramirez-Brayboy: Understanding the Hurdles Race

How would you rate the season so far?
I feel like I had an pretty good season so far. I dropped my open 400 time quite a lot. My hurdles were slacking a little bit but mentally I understand the race better and I know what i need to do to run faster which makes me an overall better runner.

How did you get involved in the sport?
During the end of my 9th grade year, all of my friends (Zane, Trent, Jaden etc.) We all were running track and they convinced me to run my 10th grade year.

What do you hope to achieve this weekend? Please describe/explain.
I hope to break the state record in the 400H and run a 46 split in the 4x4. I would also like to go 14.5 in the 110H.

What is your training like this week?
Practice this week was overall pretty light. My coaches don't want me to strain myself too much so I can be ready for State this weekend.

What part of the race do you feel is your strongest and most
challenging? Please explain.
I come out a little slower than most people during my races. I try to have a good second half of my race. That being said, with the hurdles, I struggle a lot with the second curve and the last 100 because with my usual race plan, my steps are off with the hurdle and I either chop me feet or go over relatively slow.

What do you hope to do after the regular season?
I have been running nonstop for 3 years now. I want to take a tiny week or two break after AAU state.

What keeps you motivated?
My family, college, coaches and competing. College is expensive these days, so running can get me into college and save my Ma a lot of money. My coaches have a lot of faith in me and I have all my faith and trust into them, I would hate to disappoint them. I have always loved competition so naturally, I want to get better and better to race against better and better people.

What will you remember about being on the
Byrnes team this season?
I'd have to say the family aspect of the team. Our team has been through a lot in the past few years but we have always remained a solid family first team kinda team.

Do you play other sports? Please explain.
I do not play any other sports. I used to when I was younger but I decided to stop playing when I got to high school.

How would you rate your qualifier performance?
On a scale of 1 through 10, I would say an 8. I was trying to PR but my last two hurdles were a mess.

How do you look at having the top
400m hurdles time in the state?
I see it as a luxury. When people open Milesplit and go to the rankings, my name pops up. Since the 10th grade when I started, seeing your name on the rankings was one of my dreams. I still like to open Milesplit and just look at my name.
