Airport's Jayla Jamison was named Gatorade state track and field athlete of the year earlier this week. Jamison is the first track and field athlete from the school to receive the honor.
Jamison is now a finalist for Gatorade's national athlete of the year. A freshman, Jamison earned All-American honors in the events at New Balance Nationals. An eight-time state champion, she won the 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump this past May at the state meet.
"Jayla is a phenomenal athlete in that she has a vision for [for how to attack] each event that she does," said John Hostetler, head coach of Aiken. "She has been winning and competing at the South Carolina state championships since she was a seventh grader. She sets goals and works to achieve them each and every year."
