An event that brings all types and ages of track and field athletes is coming to Greenville. The 2004 South Carolina Open and Master's Track and Field Classic is set for May 29 at Furman University's Irwin Belk Track and Field complex. Furman is located off Poinsett Highway in Greenville. Eastside High School is hosting the meet. Ed Boehmke and Adrian Craven are the meet directors.
This meet is different from several others as the open age group is from 19-29, however athletes come of all ages to the meet. As of May 24 the oldest athlete is a member of the 80 age group. 58 athletes are currently entered. Each athlete competes in an average of 2.43 events, totaling 141 events out of the 58 athletes entered.
Following the open age group the groups go up by five year increments. Some of the events that will take place include the javelin throw, racewalking (5000) and steeplechase event.
Furman's facility includes a 400-meter Mondo surface track with 42" lanes. There are two long/triple jump runways, one pole vault runway, a javelin runway and a high jump area, all covered with Mondo on the infield. Throwing circles are cement.
The meet starts at 7:45 a.m. with the hammer throw. The 5,000-meter racewalk starts at 8 a.m. The first running event, the 5,000-meter starts at 9 a.m. The 4x100-meter relay event takes place at 12:45 p.m. and the final running event is the 4x400-meter relay event at 2:35. The schedule is tentative.
