SC Collegiate Athletes Post Olympic Qualifying Standards

Former Clemson track and field athlete Shawn Crawford will compete in the 100m dash at the 2004 Olympic Games after placing third in the event at the US Trials in Sacramento, CA. Crawford crossed the line with a time of 9.93. In June, Craword recorded this year's world-fastest time in the 100m with a time of 9.88, winning the Prefontaine Classic.

Crawford will also compete in the 200m at the Olympic Trials, beginning on Friday, July 16 (www.clemsontigers.com). Maurice Greene and Justin Gatlin finished one and two, respectively in the 100.

USC junior Lashinda Demus and Tony Allmond made the US Olympic Track and Field team in the 400-meter hurdles and the long jump, respectively. Demus has the Olympic A Standard, however Allmond must set the A standard at two meets this week.

According to www.uscsports.com both Demus and Allmond competed literally at the same time as the starters gun went off for Demus' race as Allmond hit 26 feet 7 inches - 3 3/4 inches from the Olympic A long jump standard. Demus ran a personal best 53.43, finishing third. Demus came back from a crash at the ninth hurdle to outsprint Olympic silver medalist Sandra Glover at the line. Senior Otis Harris, now running professionally for Nike, moved on to the semi-finals of the 400m by winning his heat. Harris crossed the line in 45.20. The semi-finals are on Thursday, July 15.

Tonight's Olympic Trials will air live from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m. (ET) on USA.
