Indoor Track Proposal Major Discussion Topic At Coaches Meeting

The SCTCCCA released the 2004 summer meeting minutes Monday. SCTrackworld webmaster and Eastside Head Coach Ed Boehmke opened the meeting that took place on July 27 at 4:04 p.m. in Greenville. Topics at the meeting included presenting state record trophies to the athletes, the introduction of the new SCTCCCA officers, Track Coach of the Year Awards, along with talking about introducing indoor track to the state of South Carolina as a sanctioned high school sport.

The meeting began with Laurence Sanders presenting state record trophies to Angelina Blackmon (not present: 1600m-5:02.65), Mitch Greeley (Northwestern-PV:16'9"), Dennis Martin (Westside-Boys 400IH: 53.26), Kate Niehaus (Spring Valley-3200m: 10:56.53), Toma Walker, Dexter Badgett, Andre Gladness, Andrew Gladness (Stratford-4x800m: 7:55.14), Megan Fulks, Shalyn McMichael, Leah Doster, Niehaus (Spring Valley-4x800m: 9:30.34).

The new officers for the association are (John Jones, Spring Valley: President), Jeff Buys (Ridge View: Secretary/Treasurer), Bobby Urban (Dorman, Upstate 3A/4A VP), Travis Harris (Emerald, Upstate 1A/2A VP), Danny Brooks (Dreher, Mid-state 3A/4A VP), Marshall King (Lamar, Mid-state 1A/2A VP), Jackie O'Rourke (West Ashley, Lower-state 3A/4A VP) and Dennis Brachna (Carver's Bay, Lower-state 1A/2A VP).

Following the introduction of the athletes Boehmke introduced the coaches association officers. A few minutes later the vice presidents handed out the Track Coach of the Year awards. Buys (4A Boys, Ridge View), Calvin Hudgins (4A Girls, Northwestern), Rick Taylor (3A Boys, Wren), Brooks (3A Girls, Dreher), Bill Petermen (2A Boys, Andrews), Tony Colizzi (2A Girls, Bishop England), Charlie Poole (1A Boys, Lamar) and Marshall King (1A Girls, Lamar) received their awards in the respected classifications.

Urban discussed the 2004 Shrine Bowl run. This year the run will begin at the Shriners Hospital in Greenville and end at Wofford Stadium.

A proposal was made by Cowan to develop a top 10 state record list. A final revision is scheduled to be presented by the committee at the winter clinic.

Other meeting notes:
  • Bob Jenkins (Northwestern) proposed that the association recommend to the High School League Executive Committee that 3A/4A continue with a two-day state track meet schedule. The motion was seconded by Jim Kilbreth. The motion was amended to include that the field events contested on Friday night and Saturday rotate annually between 3A and 4A. The motion passed unanimously.
  • Boehmke (Eastside) proposed an amendment to the constitution that allows for the Shrine Bowl Assistant Coach to be selected at the Cross Country Coaches meeting. The motion was seconded by Glover Smiley (Spartanburg). The motion passed unanimously.
  • January 15, 2005 at 10:00 AM will be the time and date of the winter meeting. The meeting will be held at the High School League office.

    Proposals on indoor track
  • Jones (Spring Valley) discussed indoor track as a sanctioned sport in the state. It was recommended that President Jones retype the proposed letter given out at the clinic to include several changes: § strike guideline No.2 concerning no dual meet participation § include in guideline No.3 any indoor meet with 10 or more teams participating in the meet and using FAT § include in guideline No. 4 that the 1000m, 500m, and 300m qualifying standards may be used to qualify for the 800m, 400m, and 200m respectively § include in guideline No. 5 that a school may only enter one relay § change guideline No. 6 to scoring through six places instead of eight.

    Guidelines recommended at meeting:
  • First practice date: Dec. 6, 2004
  • First play date: Jan. 7, 2005
  • Dead Date: Jan. 14-15, 2004
  • State Meet: Feb. 19, 2005 (Clemson University)
  • Dual meets between schools are not allowed. (The question was asked why).
  • Qualifying for the state meet will be based on meeting qualifying standards in specified indoor meets. These meets are: Clemson Unniversity-SC Only Invitational, UNC-Open Invitational, Virginia Tech Invitational, UT-Invitational and the Clemson University-Friday Night Special.
  • The qualifying standards will be the same as the North Carolina Indoor Standard, with the following exceptions:
    200 Men: 23.99
    400 Men: 52.99
    800 Men: 2:09.99

    200 Women: 27.99
    400 Women: 64.99
    800 Women: 2:39.99

    Scoring at the meet was proposed to include eight places (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1), however the idea of only scoring six places was discussed.
