Following a vote of the 82 U.S. athletes 33-year-old Allen Johnson (Irmo) will participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games as captain of the USA Track & Field Team.
Johnson is the 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the 110-meter hurdles and is the only four-time world champion in his event. In 1997 Johnson received the Jesse Owens Award as top male track & field athlete.
Johnson was nominated by US Trials champion Adam Nelson, a shot putter. Justin Gaitlin, a sprinter competing in the 100m and 200m was the spokesperson for his nomination.
