Future Stars: S.C.’s Top Girls Javelin Thrower Brett Jones

Porter Gaud sophomore Brett Jones talks with scrunners.com for this week's future stars interview. Jones has the top mark in S.C. for the javelin and no. 4 in the U.S.

How do you look at your place in the rankings so far this season?

I feel great being number one in South Carolina and number four in the U.S. as a freshman. I know it is early and there are still a lot of good throwers that haven't thrown yet, and I have more work to do.

What's your favorite event and why?
My favorite event is the javelin because I have been throwing since I was seven years old and I've made so many friends throughout the country through throwing.

"My motivation is my competitive drive because I love competing so much and I also love bringing more attention to the sport that very few know about, but is one that I love!" - Brett Jones

What goals do you have for the season?
My goals for the season are to help my team win a state championship by achieving my personal goals of two state championships in the javelin and discus, and breaking the school record in the discus. I would love to end the season with 2 school records.

How would you rate your season so far?
I would rate my season an 8 out of 10 because I am pleased with how it has been going so far, but I know there's still a lot of room for improvement.

How did you get involved in the sport?
I have been throwing since I was seven and I've been in the environment of Track since I could remember, but I really got into it because both of my parents threw in college.

What's your motivation?
My motivation is my competitive drive because I love competing so much and I also love bringing more attention to the sport that very few know about, but is one that I love!

What future goals do you have?
In the future, I hope to keep improving my throwing and go to college for throwing and compete at even higher levels.

What challenges do you have in the sport?
Some challenges I face in the sport is finding places to train.  When I do practice, I'm throwing in the stadium field where a lot of people are having their games or practices.  Oftentimes this limits my ability to practice events like javelin and discus.
