Marlee Asmer Looks Back at 2023, Ahead to Shrine Bowl Run

"Marlee has been a vocal leader of the girls team. She has also worked hard this season to become a very good runner. During our daily team meetings Marlee loves to contribute to the discussions.  She always has something to add/input to the topic of the day." - Bishop England coach Tony Colizzi

How do you look at the season as it concluded earlier this month?
I'm so thankful for this season, and it honestly couldn't have ended better. As a team we were extremely successful, but I was also able to meet my own personal goals. Overall, being awarded another state title is so huge, and I'm grateful to be a part of the Bishop England team.

What does it mean to be named to the 2023 Shrine Bowl Run team?
Being a part of the Shrine Bowl Run team is a huge honor, and one I didn't see coming. Being recognized alongside the top senior athletes in the state while also running for a good cause is an opportunity I'm so grateful for.

How and when did you get involved in running?
My Dad ran and signed me up for local 5Ks with the rest of my family at a young age. When I got to middle school, I joined a running club, which wasn't extremely serious, but it helped build my passion for the sport. My freshman year of high school I joined the track team, and I've been running non-stop ever since.

How was summer training?
Summer training was really good. It was fun to be able to see all of my teammates over the summer and start building relationships with new members. It also ensured that I started off at good spot at the beginning of the season.

What were your key races this year?
My key races this year were Eye Opener, region, and state. Eye Opener was big for me because it was the first time being able to race, and it gave me a starting point for the season. Region was definitely a key race for me, and our entire team, because we knew it was going to be a good course and perfect weather. State was not only my last race of the season, but my last race in high school, so it meant a lot to me.

"I couldn't have done any of this without the amazing support from my coaches, teammates, family and friends. I'm so incredibly thankful for all of the support I've been given."  - Marlee Asmer

What is the kind of race strategy you prefer?
My race strategy differs depending on the course, but I usually just try to stay with other athletes that I know will challenge me and my time.

How do you adapt if it changes?
If there is ever a huge change in the way my race was planned to go, I just take the time to remind myself that I've practiced in all kinds of conditions before, and I'm capable of competing in those conditions as well.

What are your plans after high school?
My plan after high school is to attend college and continue running, either for a college or club.

What other hobbies do you have?
Dance is a big hobby that I still have. I danced for both a performance and competition company for 11 years before quitting to focus on running. I still occasionally take a class or two during the week to stay in the studio and keep up with my friends.

What would you like to say to those that support you?
I couldn't have done any of this without the amazing support from my coaches, teammates, family and friends. I'm so incredibly thankful for all of the support I've been given.

Do you prefer track or cross country more? Why?
I prefer track more than cross country. I originally just ran track my freshman year and didn't join cross country until my sophomore year. I just love the entire environment that track season brings and the multitude of events available. Although I can't imagine not being a part of the cross country team, I'd have to put my preference for track above xc.

Favorite course in S.C.?
My favorite course in S.C. is the Newberry course. As a team we have always had great races there, so I have a lot of great memories attached to it.
