NCAA East Regional Notes: South Carolina Women First in Team Standings

The NCAA East Regionals took place from May 27-28 in New York at Icahn Stadium. The South Carolina women captured the team title with 102.25 points to Miami\'s second place total of 73.

The Clemson women finished 23rd overall and the Coastal Carolina women placed 36th overall. 43 teams on the women\'s side tallied team points.

In the men\'s team standings South Carolina placed fourth with 55.25 points. Clemson finished fifth with 35 points. Coastal Carolina placed 28th out of 38 teams.

Women\'s Recap
The Gamecock\'s 4x100 relay team (Amberly Nesbitt-JL Mann, Erica Whipple, Alexis Joyce, Shalonda Solomon) placed first in the preliminaries with a 43.89 finishing time. The team then came back to seal the relay win in 43.68.

South Carolina\'s Ronnetta Alexander and teammate Tiffany Ross-Williams placed third and seventh, respectively in the 100 hurdles preliminaries. Alexander placed second in the 100 hurdles finals in 13.29 and Ross-Williams placed fifth overall in 13.36.

Gamecock teammates Stephanie Smith and Natasha Hastings placed third and fifth, respectively in the 400-meter preliminaries. In the 400 finals Smith finished second in 51.54 seconds with Hastings rounding out the top seven.

Whipple and Nesbitt of South Carolina finished two and three, respectively in the 100 meter preliminaries. Solomon rounded out the top five in the preliminaries. Joyce finished eighth in the preliminaries. In the finals Whipple placed second, Solomon finished third, Joyce finished third and Nesbitt placed seventh for the Gamecocks.

Solomon and Whipple placed first and fifth going into the finals of the 200-meter dash with times of 22.99 and 23.13, respectively. Solomon placed fourth in the finals in 22.91 while teammate Whipple finished fifth in 23.10.

In the 400-meter hurdles Ross-Williams, Silja Ulfarsdottir (Clemson) and Shevon Stoddart (South Carolina) placed second, third and fifth, respectively in the preliminaries. Ross-Williams and Stoddart finished second and third in the finals with Ulfarsdottir finishing in the top four.

South Carolina 4x400 relay team (Stoddart, Hastings, Tawana Watkins, and Smith) finished first in 3:29.19, a new East Region record, held previously by Miami. Miama finished second at the 2005 meet in 3:32.23. Clemson\'s relay team finished seventh in 3:39.09.

In the field event portion of the meet Cheryl Terrio () of South Carolina finished third overall in the women\'s pole vault. Terrio cleared 13-03.75 in the vault with the first and second place finishers clearing the same height, but due to previous height clearances, Terrio placed third.

Gisele Oliveira, a senior Tiger sealed a victory in the triple jump with a best leap of 44-11.75 with Coastal Carolina sophomore Chasity Johnson placing third with a best of 43-09.00.

Men\'s Recap
In the men\'s 110-high hurdles preliminaries Gamecock freshman Jason Richardson rounded out the top three in 13.73, one-tenth of a second behind preliminaries winner Josh Walker of Florida. Richardson finished second in the finals in 13.66 to Walker.

In the men\'s 100 event Ron Richardsof Clemson, Leroy Dixon and Rodney Martin of South Carolina, finished three, four and five, respectively in the preliminaries. Dixon finished second in 10.42 with Martin placing fourth and Richards finishing sixth in the 100 finals.

In the 800 event South Carolina\'s William Emase finished second the preliminaries in 1:49.80. Emase finished second in the finals with a 1:50.02 showing.

Scott Kautz of Clemson finished fifth in the preliminaries and finals of the 400 hurdles. Kautz ran times of 51.00 and 50.71 in the preliminaries and finals, respectively.

The men\'s preliminaries of the 200 consisted of Martin, Richards, Dixon and Adrian Durant (South Carolina). In the finals of the half-lap event Martin finished third in 20.57. Dixon finished fifth and Clemson\'s Richards finished sixth in 20.86, six-tenths of a second behind Dixon of South Carolina.

Clemson\'s Itay Magidi rounded out the top two in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:35.96 to winner Andy Smith\'s (NC State) 8:33.25.

In the field event portion of the meet Jason Bell of Clemson finished second in the triple jump with a best leap of 51-06.50.

In the men\'s long jump South Carolina\'s Greig Cryer was crowned East Region Champion with a best leap of 25-01.25. Clemson senior George Kitchens rounded out the top three with a best of 24-11.00.

The South Carolina 4x400 relay squad (Keith Hinnant, Jamil James, Martin and Richardson) finished fourth with a 3:07.35 finishing time.

The NCAA Outdoor Nationals is scheduled for June 8-11 at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif.

Side Note: To earn entrance into the national championship meet, you have to finish in the top eight in an individual event and top six a relay to be put into the at large selection pool. Once in that pool, your season best mark will be used for qualification.
