scrunners: When did you start to compete in track and field?
stephens: I started when I was in the eighth grade.

scrunners: What or whom gave you the idea to compete in track and field?
stephens: We had to in order to lift weights for football. Then when I started throwing I began to like it, so I decided to continue throwing.

scrunners: Do you remember your first event?
stephens: Yes, it was the shot put.

scrunners: How did you do?
stephens: I threw around 30-feet on my very first throw.

scrunners: What have you gained in knowledge about the sport and life since becoming a track and field athlete?
stephens: This sport is very old and the Greek used most of the field events as weapons when they were in war. On the life aspect, being on a team of around 100 guys is like having 100 more brothers. I have learned to look out for them because I know that they would have my back if I needed them.

scrunners: What were you thinking going into the Coaches Classic meet?
stephens: I went in thinking of it as a new season because, I wasn\'t performing that well in the shotbput, and I saw it as a chance to turn things around.

scrunners: Were you pleased with your first place finishes in the shot put and discus?
stephens: Yes.

scrunners: Do you play any other sports?
stephens: I played football.

scrunners: What kind of training did you do prior to the start of this season?
stephens: I spent a lot of time lifting weights.

scrunners: How does your training change as the season progresses?
stephens: I have a trainer that I am working out with now and we are working more on my strength and quickness.

scrunners: Do you have a pre-event tradition?
stephens: Three of my teammates and I usually hang out before we go to the meets. We will go and buy Gatorade and hang out until its time to throw.

scrunners: What keeps you motivated to get out the door for school and practice?
stephens: Me knowing that in a few days I will be competing against someone other than my team, and I just want to go out there and work to become better.

scrunners: What kind of goals have you set for this season and the future? How do you see yourself achieving these goals?
stephens: This season I have set a shot put goal of 62\'0,\" which is our school record and 185\'7,\" which is also our school record, but mainly to win the state championship. I just have to keep working hard everyday in practice.

scrunners: Who do you feel is your biggest competition this year? Explain.
stephens: In the shotput there is Julian Hartsell, who won the state championship last year, Alex Padgett of Fort Mill, and Fred Godfrey of West Ashley along with other throwers. My biggest competitor is myself.

scrunners: What do you look for in a coach and what do you expect a coach to look for in you?
stephens: Someone who is always there to push you and help correct you when you are wrong. I expect a coach to look at me as a hard worker, who wants to get better, and one who will give his all.

scrunners: Have you ever met a professional athlete?
stephens: I know Michael and Peter Boulware and I have been around several professional athletes most of my life. I really don\'t talk to them that often, but when I do, it\'s mainly about football.

scrunners: What will you remember from high school come May after graduation?
stephens: The people that I went to school with.

scrunners: What do you see happening with the future of track and field in South Carolina?
stephens: I think track in South Carolina will start getting more respect, because we have athletes that are representing our state in many big track meets around the country.

scrunners: Do you see yourself becoming a collegiate track and field athlete? What are you looking to also do in the future?
stephens: Yes, hopefully I will be next year. After, I graduate from college, I either want to be a sports agent, or a player/team representative.

scrunners: Do you see yourself becoming a coach in the future? If so, why and what level?
stephens: No, I dont think I will become a coach.

scrunners: If there is one thing in the world, what could you do and why?
stephens: I would make world peace. I watched Miss Congeniality last night (March 28).
