COLUMBIA, SC - The boys 400m dash at the Bojangles Track and field Classic was one for the ages. Newton's (GA) Elija Godwin and High Point Christian Academy's (NC) Chantz Sawyers battled down to the wire. At the line, it was Godwin who would come away with the win running new US No 3. mark of 46.34. That time also ties the meet record set back in 2004 by Cedric Goodman from Newnan, Georgia.
Sawyers was not far behind Godwin dropping a new US No. 5 time of 46.43 to take 2nd. Rounding out the top four in the race were Stratford's Davonte Fuller (47.44) and New Hampstead's Andre Jeff (47.72).
Godwin also came back and dominated the 200m dash running a new US No. 8 wind-legal time of 21.31. The double also earned the Newton junior the most outstanding track athlete of the meet.
We talked with Sawyers after the 400m and Godwin after the 400m.
