Developing: Stadium work cancels 2010 Taco Bell Classic

The 2010 Taco Bell Classic, scheduled for April 9-10, has been canceled due to stadium construction at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, meet director John Jones told scrunners.com Wednesday.

The meet has been held for 19 years on the second weekend of April. The last time the event was canceled was 1991 when a new track was constructed, the school said in a release.

Returning in 2011 on April 8-9, the facility upgrades include a new rubber track surface and a new scoreboard that will interface with the track and field program's FinishLynx timing system. Other areas that are under construction include new fieldhouses, press boxes, concession areas, restrooms, seating and a new entrance that includes 42 brick arches.

Jones said the type of surface has not been determined at this time.

"This meet has become one of the largest and most prestigious in the country," meet management said in a statement. "It is one of 10 National Scholastic Sports Foundation "Select Meets."

"Coach Jones and his group of meet organizers do a great job in putting on the Taco Bell meet," said NSSF representative John Blackburn. "It is too bad that the Spring Valley track will not be available for a meet in 2010. I am confident that the Taco Bell meet will be a great success when it returns in 2011. I am sure they will make a big push to promote the meet when it returns."

One-hundred and 45 schools from nine states competed in the 2009 with over 2,400 athletes.

scrunners.com is developing this story and talked to Jones earlier today which will be included in this story as soon as time permits.
