Interview: Westminster Catawba\'s Chrystal Haire To Not Run At Collegiate Level

scrunners: What made you decide to not run competively in college?
haire: It was a tough decision for me that I wrestled over for several months. There were several factors that played a role in my decision. One of the key factors being my major. I wanted to major in Nutrition. Clemson has a Nutrition major, but Furman does not. I had made a decision awhile back that if I was going to run, I was only going to run at Furman because I feel that university has the best cross country program. Not only do they have a wonderful team, but the atmosphere there is very welcoming. I knew I\'d have no trouble fitting in with the team, and I knew I would enjoy it there. But because Furman did not have my major, I decided to go to Clemson.

scrunners: Which school was your top choice, why?
haire: As previously stated, Furman was my top choice for running. I believe it\'s imptant to feel like you belong to a team, and that\'s how I felt when I went to Furman.
scrunners: What do you think you will continue to do with running in the future?
haire: I will certainly continue to run on my own, as it is a passion of mine. I plan to enter road races and possibly enter into invitationals unattached. A few years down the road, I\'d love to start doing marathons. That\'s a huge goal of mine.

scrunners: How have you been running since the end of cross country?
haire: I run on my own around my neighborhood. I usually do at least 6.5 miles, but I add some long distance days about once or twice a week. On those days, I do about 10 miles.

scrunners: Do you see yourself running any open cross country and track and field meets?
haire: Definitely! I\'d love to do that. My dad has already mentioned that to me on several occasions, and I think that\'s a great idea. I love the thrill of competing.

scrunners: On college visits, what did you do and what did you talk to school personnel and team members/students about?
haire: Each college visit was different for me. However, on each one, I always toured the school, the athletic facilities, etc. I was able to get a good feel for what campus life was like. My main concerns were balancing an academic, athletic, and social life, so I always made sure I asked the team members questions regarding that. I would also ask questions about what practices and meets were like. I just tried to get a solid basis of knowledge about the school and cross country/track program.

scrunners: What are you looking to study in college?
haire: I\'m going into the Pre-Med track because I want to becoming a Pediatrician. I will major in Nutrition, though. In addition to becoming a Pediatrician, I hope to become a Nutritionist later on in life.

scrunners: Based on visits to Clemson and Furman, what made you decide to choose Clemson and did you take any other visits to other schools?
haire: Well, I\'ve already stated why I chose Clemson: it had my major. But I would like to point out that I was born and raised a Tiger fan. Both of my parents attended Clemson, and my grandfather played football there. I love the campus life at Clemson! I prayed long and hard about my decision between Clemson and Furman, and I feel like God wants me to be at Clemson. I feel that is where I need to be. :) Although I had offers to visit other schools (i.e. Harvard, Wake Forest, Columbia, etc.), I chose to only visit Furman and Clemson because they were the only two schools I was seriously considering running for.
