    Mauldin senior Alyssa Kulik led the Mavericks to the team title in the girls invitational race at the second annual Providence Invitational in Charlotte.  Kulik covered the McAlpine Park course in 18:48, the only runner under 19 minutes.

    2006 state cross country Class AAAA state champion Mauldin Mavericks girls are ranked no. 5 in the Nike Team Nationals southeast region preseason poll, released last week. Senior Alyssa Kulik captured the individual state cross country title in 2006.

    The South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association announced at the summer meeting in July to continue to keep Class A/AA combined for this season. The boys Class A and AA are now separate races at the state championships on Nov. 3 - starting in 2006. SCISA members are also included in the polls for both teams and individuals, according to the association. Release dates: Aug. 14, 28; Sept. 11, 25; Oct. 9, 23; Nov. 6.

    Greater Greer News: Backward steps are not very helpful in cross country. So Greer High girls coach Paul Masse does not expect to take any. Last spring, Masse was dismissed as the Yellow Jackets' track and field coach after committing a South Carolina High School League violation by allowing an ineligible middle-school runner to compete in a varsity meet.
