Pope first in 400 hurdles

Andrews rising senior Marcus Pope (Team NSSF) finished first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.85 at Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Puerto Rico Saturday.

Teammate Marcelles Atkinson placed second out of three athlete field in 53.11.

Pope placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (13.99) and was a member of Team NSSF's winning 400-meter relay team (40.75). US Virgin Island was second in 41.97.

Andrews rising senior Pope set for Caribbean Scholastic

Rising Andrews High School senior Marcus Pope is entered in Saturday's Caribbean Scholastic Invitational. The meet, at city of Carolina Track and Field Stadium in Puerto Rico, is in its second year. Andrews, a Class AA school, finished second in the team rankings behind Woodland High School, 73.5 to 67. Bishop England rounded out the top three with 66 points.

Pope, a 2007 state champion in the 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, is entered in the 110- and 400- hurdles. Pope placed fifth in the 400 hurdles (52.22) at Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, earlier this month.

Keith Graham, a 2006 graduate of West Ashley High School, competed in the first Caribbean Scholastic Invitational.

  • Seneca graduate Brookins entered in 100-meter dash at Pan-American Junior Athletic Championships (July 6-8: São Paulo, Brazil); Brookins third in 100 (11.46) at USATF Junior Nationals.
  • Clemson's Miller Moss (Wilson Hall) placed sixth in the decathlon at junior nationals with 3633. Frank Shotwell (Michigan) was fifth with 3661 points.
  • KB Brown benefit meet Saturday at Greenville High School.
