2006 State Championship results
Class A boys (9 a.m.)
Class A boys starts off the South Carolina High School League State Cross Country Championships Saturday at 9 a.m. in Columbia at Sandhills Research Park.
The race, in its second year being split from Class AA did not hold qualifying meets due to number of teams.
Academic Magnet junior Allan DaPore captured the title last season in 17 minutes, 3 seconds.
DaPore has a 2007 MileSplit.us best of 16:51 at the Stratford all-comers meet on Sept. 9.
Christ Church boys captured the team title over Academic Magnet, easily with 34 points to Academic Magnet's 102 in 2006.
Leading Christ Church this season is senior Michael Brearley (35th at 2007 Eye Opener Championship Boys). Brearley did not run in the 2006 state meet.
Others seniors on the Cavaliers' varsity team are Ryan Dickerson, Blakely Jarrett, Hunter Smith and Edward Wixler.
Class A and AA girls (9:30 a.m.)
Bishop England girls will look to go for their second-straight team title Saturday.
The Bishops are led by sophomore Jeanne Stroud. Stroud has a 2007 MileSplit.us South Carolina database best of 19:34, leading the Class A/AA meet.
Palmetto finished second in 2006 with 109 points to Bishop England's 64.
Class AA boys (10 a.m.)
Broome senior Stefan Shealy, holding the second fastest MileSplit.us South Carolina database best of 15:35 this season, will look to capture his third straight state title Saturday. In 2006, Shealy had the fastest time of the day (15:38).
Bishop England junior A.J. Fitzsimmons and Pelion senior Shane Kyzer look to be top finishers in Saturday's 10 a.m. race.
A close team competition in Class AA boys is possible Saturday with Pendleton looking to go for three-straight and Broome and Bishop England making up possible top team finishers.
Class AAA girls (11 a.m.)
The girls Class AAA race finish may come down to a battle between Mann junior Kate Borowicz and Daniel freshman Sinead Haughey.
Haughey leads the state with a MileSplit.us South Carolina database best of 18:07 (Cleveland Park in Greenville). Borowicz has a database best of 18:18 at Coaches Classic. Haughey placed fourth at Coaches Classic on Sept. 15 with a time of 18:57, separated from Borowicz by Class AAAA runners Mary Kate Dubard (Northwestern) and Alyssa Kulik (Mauldin).
Borowicz, Coaches Classic International girls champion this past September, captured the individual title in 2005 and 2006, running 18:05 last season at the state meet.
The Lions lead Class AAA team standings going into the meet, based on MileSplit.us South Carolina team database scoring with 205. Greer is second with 238. Mann is close behind with 287.
Daniel girls have won the past two state team titles over Mann. Greer girls captured the team title in 2004 over Daniel.
Class AAA boys (11:30 a.m.)
Chapin senior Luke Lovelace will look to defend his state title Saturday in the Class AAA boys race. Lovelace has a 2007 MileSplit.us database best of 15:30, leading South Carolina.
Top runners for the race include Mann senior Matt Scanlon. Scanlon's brother, Chris captured the 2005 Class AAA individual title.
Based on MileSplit.us South Carolina team database scoring, Mann looks to be the favorite Saturday. Wade Hampton (G) and Chapin also look to be in contention for top spots.
Dreher senior Alex Hill has the No. 3 time this season (16:00).
Wade Hampton (G) boys are led by sophomore Morgan Bateman, who has a season-best 16:16.
Bluffton captured the state title in 2006 and 2005. Prior to that Blue Ridge sealed the win in 2004 and Wade Hampton (G) captured the team title from 1999-2003.
Class AAAA girls (12 p.m.)
Mauldin Mavericks, led by senior Alyssa Kulik, look to capture their third-straight team title.
Fellow senior Hannah Morgan is second for the Mavericks this season.
Competitors in the team competition for the Mavericks include Spartanburg and Dorman. Boiling Springs looks to place in the top team standings.
The individual race Saturday shows Northwestern senior Mary Kate Dubard as the favorite with a MileSplit.us South Carolina database best for 2007 of 18:11.
Kulik, looking to defend her title, has a MileSplit.us South Carolina 2007 database best of 18:16.
Spartanburg Vikings teammates Santresa Jamison (senior) and seventh grade teammate Evie Tate can push the front pack with MileSplit.us database bests of 18:44 and 18:48, respectively for 2007.
Class AAAA boys (12:30 p.m.)
Fort Mill eighth grade distance star Mark Blackmon leads the team and Class AAAA going into the last race of the day at 12:30 p.m.
Blackmon has the No. 6 MileSplit.us South Carolina database best of 16:10, run at Wendy's Invitational on Oct. 6.
Competitors for the individual title include Dorman sophomore Brandon Easler and Clover sophomore Mick Francis. Wando senior Stephen Wilson leads the Warriors into the meet.
Based on MileSplit.us South Carolina team database scoring, Wando looks to be the favorite with Dorman second in Class AAAA scoring. Summerville makes up the third Class AAAA team.
Wando boys have never captured the team title.
In 2006 former Lexington runner Josh Walker (Class of 2007) took home the individual title in 15:44 and Fort Mill won the team title over Northwestern, 41-109. Northwestern captured the team titles in 2004 and 2005.
