Northwestern's DuBard breaks 5-minute mark

Northwestern senior Mary Kate DuBard broke the 5-minute mark Thursday evening during the York County Championships at South Pointe High School.

The Georgia Tech bound distance star won the 1600-meter event in a new school and meet record of 4 minutes, 58.90 seconds.

"Mary Kate became only the second girl in South Carolina track history to run sub 5," said Northwestern assistant coach Frank Tice. "Obviously, this was a new school record!"

Stanford sophomore Kate Niehaus (Spring Valley) ran a new state record of 4 minutes, 55.45 1600 during the state meet in 2006.

Fort Mill's Tiayonna Blackmon was second in 5 minutes, 7.90 seconds.

DuBard is currently 11th in the MileSplit.us 1600 rankings.

Northwestern girls won the team title over Fort Mill. Rock Hill finished third.

In boys team competition, Northwestern was first, South Pointe second and Rock Hill third.
