Limestone College schedules blood drive for Brittany Jefferson

Limestone College has scheduled a blood drive for June 9 to help Stratford senior Brittany Jefferson.

Jefferson was injured in a car accident May 18 and remains in induced coma.

"I think that is totally wonderful," said Melanie Jefferson. "Even if Brittany doesn't get (that blood), she's helping to save other lives."

Limestone cross country and track and field coach Kevin Vees told scrunners.com the blood drive is open to anyone that wants to attend and is scheduled for 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on the campus near Stephenson Dining Hall.

"This is open to anyone that wants to attend," said Vees. "I want to get the word out to the track and field community plus any person that wants to give.

"I am so thankful to have the faculty and staff of Limestone College helping me out with having the blood drive. I really want to help Brittany and her family in any way I can and since I can't be down there (Charleston). The blood drive will help her get the credit for the blood that she needs."

Recovery fund established for Stratford's Brittany Jefferson, named athlete of the year at school

A recovery fund has been established for Stratford senior Brittany Jefferson.

Jefferson, the 2008 Class AAAA state champion in 100-meter hurdles, was involved in a serious accident May 18 in Charleston.

"She is progressing, but very slowly," Jefferson's mother Melanie said Monday. "It's like she's been hit with a sledgehammer and body just has to heal.

"They also removed more glass from her face."

Collen Mitchell told scrunners.com in an e-mail the fund is managed by Bank of America.

More details are available by contacting Mitchell at (843) 899-6294 (home) or (843) 259-4874 (cell/text). E-mail Mitchell at Colleen.Mitchell@bp.com.

Jefferson's grandfather, Cal can also be contacted at (843) 345-5977.

"Come one come all, especially track fans to support Brittany Jefferson back to a full recovery," said Mitchell. "Any monetary amount would all add up to a lot.

"The family of Brittany whole heartedly thanks everyone for their support."

Jefferson family friend Lynda Venning said an e-mail to scrunners Tuesday night, "Brittany is still critically ill, but stable. Today her heart rate and fever are still high. They are waking her up slowly by reducing her medicine by a half milligram. She responded by opening her eyes and turning/shaking her head. To God be the Glory."

"I would love to give people a thank you note," Melanie Jefferson said.

Jefferson's mother also told scrunners.com Brittany was named athlete of the year at Stratford and is graduating. "She will get a diploma," Jefferson said. "They just closed her out. She did enough work."

Stratford's graduation is Saturday and Jefferson said she was talking to the school to see if a family member could walk in Brittany's place.
