Shrine Bowl Run set for Saturday morning

Twenty six senior cross country runners from the state will run a combined 32.7 miles Saturday morning as transporters of the official Shrine Bowl game ball.

The runners were chosen based on their performances at the state meet on Nov. 7.

The Shrine Bowl Run starts at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville and ends at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg.

Running the ball on the field will be Kyle Coby (Woodmont), Aaron Ramirez (Woodmont) and Jeanne Stroud (Bishop England).

Coby is a former patient of the Greenville hospital.

Prior to the run, that starts at 8 a.m., runners will tour the hospital.

The run was started in 1986 by the late Noble Everett J. Stoudenmire, Jr. (Jamil Shrine Center, Columbia), with the help of the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Bishop England coach Tony Collizi is the 2009 coach. Christ Church's Rodney Adamee is serving as the assistant.

Mark H. Jones is the run chairman.

Shriners Hospital for Children has received more than $51 million from Shrine Bowl Games across the United States. More than 475,000 children have been rehabilated at the Shriners Hospitals. The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is played to benefit the Greenville Shriners Hospital for Children and 21 other Shriners Hospitals across the nation. Since the first Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in 1937, these athletes have help to raise over $67 million for Shriners Hospitals.
