Guest Column: Building Cohesion and Culture at Daniel HS

By Jacob Wichelns, Daniel girls track and field head coach

With 18 events spanning throws, jumps, sprints, and distance, high school track teams across South Carolina embrace the diverse talents and specialized skills of so many different groups of athletes. However, this specialization can sometimes create barriers and divisions within the team. We have implemented strategies to build cohesion and foster a strong team culture that breaks these divisions and results in team unity.

One of the key initiatives we have introduced is a leadership council. This council consists of representatives who are elected by their fellow teammates from different event groups and grade levels. Through regular meetings with the head coach, the council addresses important topics such as team culture, leadership, and goals. These sessions are a great opportunity to teach leadership qualities, empowering athletes to go back into their groups and lead. The group also serves as a bridge between players and team leadership. When team-wide issues arise, we solve them in the council.

When we created the leadership council, breaking the mold of division between event groups was one of the first issues the group discussed. The group took measurable actions to help build team cohesion and still does. The leadership council has played a monumental role in shaping the team's direction and success for years to come. It set the foundation for us to emphasize the importance of unity, collaboration and mutual support among all athletes, regardless of their event specialties.

Cohesion between the different event groups is crucial for the overall success of the team. While each event demands unique skills and training, we emphasize the significance of celebrating and appreciating the accomplishments of every athlete. We encourage our team members to support and cheer for their teammates across events, fostering a sense of unity and shared pride in the collective achievements of the team.

Building a strong team culture and fostering cohesion is an ongoing process that requires constant attention and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Here are some tips we have found valuable in our journey:

  • Communication: Foster open and honest communication among athletes, coaches, and the leadership council. Encourage dialogue, active listening, and the exchange of ideas to better understand different perspectives.
  • Shared goals: Establish shared goals that encompass the aspirations of all event groups. Encourage athletes to recognize and appreciate the importance of each event in contributing to the team's overall success.
  • Team-building activities: Organize team-building activities that bring athletes from different event groups together. This can include joint practices, group outings, or team-building exercises to promote camaraderie and a sense of belonging.
  • Supportive environment: Create a supportive and inclusive environment where athletes feel valued, respected, and encouraged to collaborate. Encourage athletes to celebrate each other's achievements and provide support during both triumphs and challenges.

By implementing these strategies and maintaining a focus on building cohesion and culture, we have witnessed the transformation of our track and field team into a unified and tightly-knit group. Our athletes take pride not only in their individual performances but also in the collective accomplishments of the team as a whole.

Together, we continue to strive for excellence, breaking down barriers and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve.
