Torric Davis, a senior at Spring Valley High School is competing at the Great Southwest Classic. The meet runs from June 2-4 in Albuquerque, NM.
According to dyestat.com Davis has the fifth fastest time coming into the boy\'s 100 event. Davis is entered with a seed time of 10.53. Davis ran the seed time at the State Championships on May 7 where the Viking sealed the win in the 4A Boy\'s 100.
Jerrick Hewitt of West Brunswick (Shallote, NC) has the fastest time (10.40) coming into the event.
Along with a win in the 100 at the State Championships Davis finished first in the 200 with a time of 21.27. Davis\' 200 time seeds him sixth in the Classic 200.
In the team state meet competition the Spring Valley boys finished second.
According to the meet website, the Great SW Classic was originally developed as a post-season invitational for the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, in 1930 and was conducted until the Depression caused the meet to close in 1933.
The meet was restructed in 1978 with 125 invited athletes with the resurrection taking places due to the work of coaches and track officials. In the 29 years of the event the meet has grown to include over 425 invited athletes from the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. Presently the Great Southwest Classic is recognized as one of the top four postseason regional/national track and field invitationals in the nation.
The 2005 event will include three days of competition. On Thursday, June 2, 2005, the events of the 16th annual Southwest Classic Decathlon and Heptathlon will begin. Friday, June 3, will feature the second day of the Decathlon and Heptathlon. Then on Saturday June, 4, 35 events will be contested for the 30th annual Southwest Classic.
The format of the meet is a \"go for broke\" competition -- no heats, no trials. The meet features three relay events (4 x 800, 4 x 400, 4 x 100) which the selection committee has the option of inviting the state\'s all-star relay members and/or a school team that represents their state.
