Kate Niehaus, a rising senior at Spring Valley High School ran a 17:01 5k Thursday night at the Greenville Track Club first All-Comers meet of the summer.
The meets take place on Thursday in the summer at the Furman University track.
Niehaus, a three-time Footlocker National finalist and first South Carolina high school runner to run under five minutes in the 1600-meters ran 400-meter splits of 83, 85, 79, 83, 81, 83, 79, 81, 83. 81, 83, and 80 seconds.
Pacing Niehaus in the 12 and a half lap event was Aubrey Darnell (Ridge View Alumnus, 4A 3200 State Champion), Brandon Hudgins (Northwestern Alumnus, 4A 1600 State Champion), McGinnis (Northwestern rising junior, 7th 2004 CC 4A State Meet in 16:57), and Greenville's Joe Gibson.
Hudgins is attending Winthrop in the Fall while Darnell will become a College of Charleston Cougar.
According to Niehaus' coach Kevin Shaw her next competition is Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. Outdoor Nationals is slated for June 17-18 at North Carolina A&T University.
At the 2005 State Championships Niehaus showed the importance of being a team member as the Vikings captured the 3200 relay State Championship along with taking home titles and new state records in the 1600 (4:59.14) and 3200 (10:47.92) events over the two day meet. Spring Valley also captured the team title in the girl's competition.
Continuing in Niehaus' footsteps are sisters Emily (rising sophomore) and Annie (rising eighth grader).
On March 13, Niehaus finished first in the Nike Indoor Championships two-mile in 10:31.87. In 2004 Niehaus finished 27th in the two-mile event at the adidas Outdoor Championships.
