COLUMBIA -- A former high school and college pole vaulter and coach hopes Lexington County will allow him to build a much-needed indoor vaulting training facility.
Rusty Shealy, who owns Rusty Shealy Pole Vault in Columbia, told scrunners.com that he has asked the county's zoning board to amend the zoning law so he can build an indoor pole vaulting training facility.
The proposed facility would be built where Shealy lives on Crockett Road, near the Columbiana Mall.
"We purchased our property for one reason," Shealy said. "We need a place for pole vaulters to train indoors where weather is never an issue."
Shealy, who was an assistant track and field coach at the University of South Carolina and coached pole vaulting for six years at Brookland-Cayce High School, operates an outdoor pole vault training facility at his home near Lake Murray since late October.
