Niehaus Finishes Fourth at Great American

Three time Footlocker National finalist Kate Niehaus posted a fourth place time of 17:40.10 in the Girl's Nike Race of Champions, held in Cary, N.C. Saturday. Niehaus, a senior was 34.60 seconds behind individual champion Aislinn Ryan (N.Y.).

Niehaus, holds the state meet best (17:36.81). At the 2005 State Championships Niehaus showed the importance of being a team member as the Vikings captured the 3200-relay State Championship along with taking home titles and new state records in the 1600 (4:59.14) and 3200 (10:47.92) events over the two day meet. Spring Valley also captured the team title in the girl's competition.

Continuing in Niehaus' footsteps are sisters Emily (sophomore) and Annie (eighth grader).

Fort Mill boys, led by senior Andrew White, finished ninth in the team seeded invitational event. The team tallied 273 points to eighth place Winter Park's (Fla.) 254 points.

White covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:32.50 (19th individually). Juniors David Huckaby (57th, 17:06.40), Travis Owens (66th, 17:18.80) and Jonathan Kawakami (68th, 17:19.80) were Fort Mill's No. two, three and four runners, respectively. Josh Mabry (95th, 17:34.00) and Stephen Powell (142nd, 18:31.70) rounded out the team's finishers. 155 runners and 22 teams made up the seeded boys invitational competition.

Stratford senior Toma Walker led the Palmetto state in the Boy's Nike Race of Champions with a 50th place time of 16:34.90.

Northwestern Trojans finished 16th out of 25 teams with Stuart McDaniel leading the squad with a 56th best time of 16:38.40. Senior J.C. Koziel crossed the line next for the Trojans with a 57th time of 16:39.60.

College notes:
Former Dorman High standout Ryan Jank posted a 27th 8k finishing time of 25:14 for the Charlotte 49ers in the Men's Nike ROC.

In the Women's seeded 5k Angelina Blackmon (Northwestern), now a sophomore at N.C. State was eighth in 18:21.1.

USC freshman Theresa Verostek (Northwestern) posted a 89th time of 20:01.10 in the Women's Nike 5k ROC.

In the Women's Small College 5k Hillcrest alumna Jennifer Hitt led Anderson College with a top three finish (19:35.70). Teammate and six-time state cross country champion Diana Willard was 10th overall in 20:13.80.

In the Men's Small College 8k Coker College teammates David Green (Easley) and Nathan Hansen finished ninth and 10th overall, respectively. Green finished in 26:50.50 while Hansen crossed the line in 26:56.90.

USC to host SEC Championship
The University of South Carolina has been selected as the new site for the 2005 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships. The event will be held at Fort Jackson's Hilton Field on Oct. 29.

The men's 8k event begins at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 6k starting at 10:30 a.m.

According to USCSports.com Louisiana State University was originally scheduled to host the event, but due to damage from Hurricane Katrina in the area, the conference had to select a new site for the championships.

The first time South Carolina hosted the Championships was in 1997. The USC women finished 11th at the 2004 SEC meet, held in Fayetteville, Ark..

The SEC consists of Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
