Regular Season Ends Saturday

The 2005 regular cross country season concludes this Saturday with the state meet in Columbia. The meet is taking place at Sandhills Research Center.

A few notes....
Spring Valley senior Kate Niehaus (state meet best record holder-17:36.81) instantly made an impact in South Carolina running as a freshman. Now as a senior, coming into the state meet as the top seed Niehaus also is the top returner for Footlocker South, which is slated for Nov. 26 at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.

In 1A/2A girls action Chesnee senior Carey Phillips looks to be a top contender for the win following a 25 second win over Broome freshman Lauren Hutson at the Upper State qualifying meet. Governor's School (Greenville) Raven Campbell, a junior, finished third at the Upper State meet. Broome overcame Pendleton, 60-62, for the team title at Upper State, giving some insight on two contenders for the team title. In Lower State 1A/2A qualifying Bishop England took the team title 47-78 over Pelion with Bishop England's Hollen Dodds taking the individual win in 20:34.

In 1A/2A boys action Governor's School runner (Hartsville) Bryan Brooks was first in 16:22 at the Lower State qualifier. Gilbert's Andrew Sheridan was second in 16:42 with Bishop England's William Stadelman rounding out the top three in 16:50. Six points separated Gilbert from team champion Bishop England at the Lower State qualifier. Stefan Shealy of Broome was first across the line at the Upper State 1A/2A qualifier in 16:39 with teammate Jeremy Vangsnes coming in second. Pendleton swept the Upper State team title over Broome 48-101.

Following a showdown that ended with Greer and Daniel's No. 6 runner the Yellow Jackets captured their third consecutive girl's state cross country title on Nov. 6 in Columbia, 62-62 over the Lions in 3A girl's action at the 2004 meet.

In 2005 Bluffton HIgh School added Hilton Head (4A) runner Marshall Meyer, giving the boys' team the ability to place high in the state meet. Wade Hampton, winning the upper state qualifying race in boys will also be in contention. Individually in the boy's competition J.L. Mann's Chris Scanlon, Dreher High's Jonathn Chu, and Chapin's Luke Lovelace look to be top competitors for the individual crown.

Daniel's Stephanie Gammon, a sophomore, won the individual title following a third place finish in 2003. J.L. Mann freshman Kate Borowicz captured the upper state title on Oct. 29, running ahead of Gammon and Stacia Streetman of Greer, all contenders for the state title. Borowicz's twin sister Emma also runs for Mann.

In the 4A boy's team race, the event can come down to a battle against Spring Valley, Northwestern and Fort Mill. Chad Holt of Mauldin leads the 4A classification with the fastest time this season.

In the girls's 4a team standings it looks like Mauldin can take the win, but not without Spring Valley and Dorman close in contention. At the Region 2-4A meet on Oct. 29 Mauldin girls sealed the win by 12 points over Dorman.

Saturday's action begins with the A/AA girls race at 9:30. The A/AA boys take to the line at 10. The 3A portion of the championships starts at 10:30 with the girls race followed by the boy's race at 11. The last two races of they day include 4A runners. The 4A girls race is at 11:30 followed by the boys at 12.

According to SCTrackworld webmaster Ed Boehmke approximately 1150 athletes are entered in the state championships, that consists of six races.

In 2003 the meet took place at Fort Jackson. Due to weather damage at Fort Jackson in 2004 the meet was changed back to Sandhills. Sandhills was also the site of the state meet in 2001 and 2002.
