He's not done yet. Cibola High School senior Bernie Montoya will get one more shot at breaking the elusive four-minute mile barrier as a high school student at the Prefontaine Classic's international mile on Friday night. Montoya's attempt comes one week after finishing fourth at the Adidas Grand Prix's Dream Mile in 4:05.65. He was one of the favorites heading into the meet after winning as a junior in 4:01.32. The Eastern Relays gets under way tonight at the University of Louisville. Annually this the top meet in Kentucky and it continues to grow more each year. Last year saw the huge Boys 3200m Run on Friday night with Jacob Thomson cracking 9 in the 3200 (first person on KY soil to do so) and a 39 runners going under the 10 minute mark. Tretez Kinnaird set a new pr in the 800 going under 1:50 for the first time. Danielle Pfeifer and Brannon Kidder from Ohio put up great displays in the 800 and 1600m. Katherine Receveur rolled in the 1600, Ronnie Baker 10.59/47 400 and that does not even cover the field events. That was all last year and this year could top that.

The Percy Warner course is a very spectator friendly course. If you’re willing, you can run from one side to another and up and down hills to get a glimpse of your favorite athlete. If you’re an athlete, well, this course has its moments. Although from a spectator’s point of view, the course doesn’t seem that hilly, but it is. And with the course being wide open, the wind will sometimes play games with you too. With that said, the times at these championships don’t always give you a good feeling that you are watching some extremely talented athletes tearing up a tough course.
