Photo by John Herzog The invite mile race at Saturday's Montgomery Invitational in Landover, Maryland is not an automatic qualifier for the Millrose Games high school mile. But when a total of six sub 4:20 milers get together, the winning performance is bound to have at least one runner Madison Square Garden-bound.  Peter Dorrell leads a solid group of Virginians in the 15 person field as two-time state champion at 1600 meters with a 4:15 best against a talented contigent of runners from outside of Virginia.

Photo by Ted Plunkett A top 15 watchout list by Brandon Miles of individual girls to keep tabs on for this fall as some of the state's best returning cross country runners. While the Virginian boys have some proven Footlocker National contenders with the likes of Griff Graves, Thomas Porter, Peter Dorrell, and Jason Witt, the Virginia girls seem to be just below that bonafide contender consideration level as of the season's beginning. However, certainly many have the potential to make the jump. Three girls who were in the exciting 2006 AAA state race finish are found within the top four ranked positions with Albemarle's Liz Barclay at #1, James River's Kristen Wolfe at #3, and Midlothian's Kathleen Lautzenheiser at #4. US #2 ranked Midlothian girls have three in the top 15 with Lautzenheiser, Leia Lautzenhsier at #8, and Paige Johnston at #10. Blacksburg girls nearly have two in the top 15 with Laurel MacMillan at #7 and Allison Homer as the first honorable mention. Only six seniors are found among the top 15 with plenty of youth leading up front. Note: Aurora Scott was left off the list as we are still attempting to confirm her status for this cross country season (not just school, but which state she will be living in this fall).

Coach Beeby's West Potomac girls finished just off making it to the state meet last fall in fifth place at the Northern Region Meet, but with six of their top seven back look to make a run at a possible podium finish in AAA led by 2006 Northern Region runner-up Elizabeth Heath.

MileStat.com's Brandon Miles takes a crack at the top 10 girls cross country teams in the state for this upcoming season. The top 5 of the 10 are revealed on Sunday with the remaining 5 to be posted on Monday. No surprise with Midlothian on top as the Lady Trojans will have one of the country's most fearsome top sevens in the nation. Midlothian pulled off the huge victory last year at Manhattan Invite and gained valuable experience with a top 10 finish at Nike Team Nationals to better prepare for a likely return trip this fall. The Lake Braddock girls, who had a group last year which would have been Virginia's best any other year if it was not for the Midlo girls, return another team with plenty of firepower with four sub 11:30 3200 meter gals including Christine Moore (pictured left by John Herzog). The defending AA state champions of Blacksburg look to firmly establish themselves as the next team after Midlothian. Maggie Walker looks to be one of the squads to move further up the totem pole than others with a very strong front two in Susannah Piersol and Clarissa Schick and possibly give the Central Region a second year in a row of two of the three podium teams in AAA. Brentsville has a solid core of five back from their tough second place finish to Blacksburg in the AA state race and will look to thrive in the new underdog role and take back their title.  Complete top 10 teams list posted Monday 7:50 PM.

The All-MileStat.com Girls Cross Country Team has been selected for the 2006 season. Awards were given out to runner of the year, coach of the year, freshmen of the year, most improved runner of the year, and comeback story of the year. Also being named were first, second, and third teams consisting of seven members for each team. Performances throughout the season were looked at with championship and post-season races being given stronger, but not ultimate consideration. The very unpredictable and inconsistent nature of the sport on a week to week basis makes any selections tough to break down into a science, but our hope is the main goal of trying to give as much as recognition as possible to individuals in the sport is noted and appreciated. Several tuneup races this weekend for cross country runners looking to continue their seasons onto Foot Locker South next Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Returning Foot Locker All-American in homeschooled junior Aurora Scott appears to be in amazing shape and ready to challenge pre-race favorite Kathy Kroeger of Tennessee as Foot Locker South champion after running a reported 16:35 road race 5K today in Williamsburg, Virginia. Meanwhile, W.T. Woodson senior Sarrah Hadiji bounced back from having to drop out of the state race with a turned ankle as she won the Charger Elite 3200 Meter Run at Chantilly High School in a reported time of 11:09. Meanwhile, Herndon\'s Ermin Mujezinovic wins the boys with a time of 9:32. With stronger representation and recruitment of their top runners, Maryland boys and girls both won the first ever Battle of the Potomac as Hermitage\'s John Vial (3rd, 16:41) and West Potomac\'s Elizabeth Heath (2nd, 19:20) lead Team Virginia.

SAT\'s and homecoming dates had plenty of runners at this year\'s Glory Days Grill Invitational held at Bull Run Regional Park attempting a juggling act and being crunched for time on a pleasant and Sunny Saturday. Thankfully, a fast 5K course layout allowed runners to finish their races quickly to head off to the next destination.

The Hermitage boys pulled a miracle turnaround in one week at the Disney Classic in Orlando, Florida as they upset NTN SE #2 Brentsville by a mere one point with both teams record low team scores of 31 and 32 points respectively. The Panthers had dropped out of the Nike Team Nationals Southeast Region rankings for the second time this season after a humbling eighth place finish at last weekend\'s Maymont Festival to only come back in one week to take down one of the top teams in the state and Southeast region in Brentsville.

The season opener for Northern Region schools in Virginia pitted two NTN Southeast ranked squads against each other in SE #5 Thomas Jefferson Science & Tech and SE #8 West Springfield. There was no surprise in Thomas Jefferson coming out as the winner by a 35 point margin of victory as their superior depth was shown by placing seven runners ahead of West Springfield\'s #5. Meanwhile, the Lake Braddock girls started off their 2006 season in impressive fashion at the Monroe Parker Invite as they won by a 45 point margin over Westfield with four runners in the top 14 places.
