Greenville County Championships moves to one division

Greenville County coaches voted 9-2 in favor of a one division county championships Thursday night.

Each school received one vote.

Berea, Christ Church, Wade Hampton and Woodmont were not in attendance at the meeting.

The meeting was scheduled to talk about making the championships more competitive.

"The coaches felt that the meet would be more competitive with just one division, both in team and individual events," said meet director Ed Boehmke. "For instance, in the girls distance races - imagine the Mauldin girls, the (J.L.) Mann girls and the Greer girls in the same race - that would not happen in two divisions. Team competition would also be closer because a dominate team in one division would not score as much with all the teams involved. Also we do the same thing in other sports - cross country and wrestling. It will make for TRUE County Champions.

We are still going to score just as many places (12) as we would have in two divisions and go 4 deep in the team awards."

The county meet is set for April 11-13 at Eastside High School in Taylors. Varsity competition is Wednesday and Thursday. The meet concludes Friday with junior varsity competition.

In 2006 Mann girls captured the division two title, Mauldin girls captured the division one title. Wade Hampton boys captured the division one title and Mann boys captured the division two title.

The event is in its 40th year for boys and 31st for girls.

The boy's meet started in 1968 by Jim Mattos (Berea) and Jim Slaton (Mann) and the girl's meet started in 1977. The girls meet split to two divisions in the early 1980s, according to Boehmke. Boehmke started the girls meet.
