Interview: Meet May River's Jackson Wright

Coach Derek Holland, May River

"Jackson has been an absolute pleasure to coach as he handles all facets of training and recovery the right way.  He came to us last spring as a 14 year old Freshman having never run track and finished the season running 1:55 in the 800, 4:22 in the 1600 and also anchored our 4x4 that ran 3:26.

Jackson showed up as a natural born leader - even as a freshman - and he makes the whole team better, leading by example in meets as well as workouts.  He's the only athlete I've seen that when given details of a workout, no matter how hard, will say, "Oh, this is going to be fun," and he means it.  The other athletes have fallen right in line with his attitude which makes my life as a coach much easier.  Jackson comes from a Christian family and has two brothers and three sisters.  They are very close and I feel he has learned many leadership skills, and a willing heart to put others above himself, which again, is very refreshing to me as a coach.  We look forward to Friday and thanks for covering our sport."

How did you feel going into the state championships with your qualifier runner-up place?
I am feeling confident as my goal of the qualifier was to run a decent time without straining myself.

What did you think of the Hilton Field at Fort Jackson course?
I really enjoyed the course and would like to run more races on it.

What was your state meet week training like?
Training was low in volume and I'm mentally preparing for what needs to be accomplished.

How would you rate your season overall?
The season has been tough achieving individual goals, but has been fun running on such a dedicated team.
