Jan. 19-25 journal
scrunners webmaster John Olson has asked me to keep a training journal during the upcoming track season to follow my progress. Below is my first entry.
Editor's note: Consult with your coach before following a training schedule. Powers has agreed to write a journal on his training as time permits during his 2009 outdoor season.
Monday, Jan. 26
Today was a six mile workout on trails and through woods. It was an easy run with a couple of teammates. The weather was cloudy and cool, and the trails were muddy and slick at times.
Tuesday, Jan. 27
On Tuesday, I ran a six mile training run alone through neighborhoods. It was a cool, somewhat misty day, and I ran mainly along roads. I felt alright and kept my pace pretty easy.
Wednesday, Jan. 28
I ran seven miles on trails and roads on Wednesday. It was warm and raining slightly, conditions that I love to run in because I stay cool without freezing. I felt good and kept up a decently fast pace, a little quicker than usual but still reasonable.
Thursday, Jan. 29
Today I went deep water running for 45 minutes like I described in my first journal. I haven’t water ran for several weeks, but I want to continue to concentrate on it as a low stress running alternative to rest my body from normal wear.
Friday, Jan. 30
I did light stretching on Friday.
Saturday, Jan. 31
On Saturday I ran seven miles on a cool evening. I did the run solo along roadsides on a cool evening. I felt fresh after water running and taking off the two days before.
Sunday, Feb. 1
I had planned on doing a long run on Sunday, but I ended up taking the day off because I had a pretty bad cold. In the past, I had run through sicknesses, but I have found that it only lengthens the amount of time that I am sick for and throws my training off for longer.
Conclusion
Next week is the first week of practice, and I am ready to finally get back to organized training after missing out on the cross country season. I hope that I have built a strong enough cardiovascular base, and I’m excited to see how hard my teammates have been working as well. Hopefully this season will be a good one!
