The South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association announced winners of the 2020 Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Scholarship Friday.
- Overall winner (by votes) Alex Cummings of Riverside - $1,500 to college education
- Carson Tillman - James Island - $1,000
- Jordan Brown - McCormick - $500
The following athletes finished in the top 10, and are listed in alphabetical order. Each athlete will receive a $200 scholarship.
The scholarship was established in 2016 (read a related guest column) to honor former association member and track coach at Goose Creek High School, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton. The association by-laws for the scholarship changed this year so the scholarship will only be awarded to one athlete in an amount between $500 and $2,500 based on funding.
The association added, "having said that, this has not been a normal year for these seniors. They have experienced something that was previously unimaginable, and they are doing it with grace. Unfortunately, that means they were not able to experience some things that every other senior class has been able to experience. The SCTCCCA board decided as a group that we wanted to honor this group of seniors in a special way since so much of their senior year has been altered. We have decided to honor the top 10 vote getters (11 because there was a tie) with scholarships of differing amounts. Congratulations to all of these athletes, and all of the applicants for their hard work on and off the track."
