Track Athlete Spotlight: Jamie Sitton of Wade Hampton

We talk with Wade Hampton's Jamie Sitton before the outdoor track and field season in South Carolina.

When did you first start running, and do you recall any of your childhood races?
I started running track when I started the 10th grade. I can recall me and all of my friends racing everyday trying to see who would become the fastest person.

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?
My moment for me was my second track meet at Eastside. I can remember everyone telling me that the last heat of the 100 meter race would filled with the fastest kids at the meet and my name was called to race in the last heat. I became so nervous because I thought to myself how would I be able to win the race. By the time I realized when actually started the race I had already won.

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?
Some of the bumps I have encountered when it comes to training for different events is having motivation day after day to become a faster runner. Also getting hurt playing football and healing fast enough to be ready to compete on the track.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?
COVID really impacted my season because I couldn't train with the other sprinters and I couldn't really go outside because of COVID.

If you had to pick: track and field or cross country, and why?
I would pick track and field because I love sprinting and I honestly can't run for a long time.

"By the time I realized when actually started the race I had already won."

How is the college recruiting process going, and what schools are you looking at?
The college recruiting process is going well for me. The schools I'm looking at are USC Upstate, Coastal Carolina, and Converse College.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?
I haven't committed to a college but I'm working on it.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?
I wish I was good at the 800 meter race because it's fascinating that others can run that long without being tired.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?
One of my biggest hobbies is playing football.

Who is your role model, and why?
My role model if my father because he has showed me if you stay motivated and remain dedicated you can get through anything.

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of the things on your list.
Some things on my bucket list are deep sea fishing, learn how to build a car and learn how to design a game.
