Liam McBryde, a Wade Hampton general cross country runner since seventh grade, had his first full summer of cross country training before his eighth grade season, his coach Rick Zeller told MileSplit South Carolina.
The now freshman General sets an example for his Wade Hampton (Greenville) cross country teammates by being "dedicated to his craft," Zeller said in a email to MileSplit SC.
McBryde is the top runner this season for the Generals - ranked 24th in 2025 South Carolina cross country rankings - and first overall in freshman rankings with a 2025 16:08.99 McBryde finished 22nd with a 16:10 at the Eye Opener meet to kick off the South Carolina portion of invitational season. He started the season in North Carolina at the WNC Carnival in 16:46.20.
McBryde has high school personal bests of
800-meter run: 2:13.76
1600-meter run: 4:29.94
3200-meter run: 10:13.98
Javelin: 21.54 meters
From his coach Rick Zeller:
Liam is one of those rare talents that we have had at Wade Hampton over the years. He has been an important member of our team since he came out as a 7th grader. His 8th grade year was the 1st season that we got to see what he could do with a full summer of cross country training. The improvement from cross country through his track season last year was impressive. He sets an example for his teammates by being dedicated to his craft. He is focused and invested in the work we ask them to do. It is hard to be in the 8th or 9th grade and be the number one on a team, but Liam has shown great leadership with his teammates. Liam has set goals that I have no doubt that he will achieve over the next 4 years. He has talent and a work ethic, something rare in many athletes today." - Rick Zeller, Wade Hampton head cross country coach
Next up for McBryde and the Generals is Fury XC Classic (Sept. 13) and Lake Murray Invitational (Sept. 20). Wade Hampton is entered in the Starlight Invitational (Sept. 27) at Riverside in Greer.
