This weekend cross country teams from around the state of South Carolina will all meet in their respective classifications to compete in the 2025 South Carolina State Championships.  For the first time the meets will be held at the Aiken Steeplechase Racecourse.  The official SCHSL State Championships began for the boys in 1970 (56th year) and 1976 for the girls (50th year).  In that time over 40,000 performances have been recorded by our athletes.  In the boys race 164 teams from 57 different schools and 135 teams from 36 schools in the girls can lay claim to being the South Carolina State Cross Country Champion.

But which of these teams and which of these schools stand out as being the best over the history of the meet?  We can all argue, as I have done in my past articles, that this can be difficult.  Courses are different lengths, even the same site from one year to the next.  The environments in which we compete are different, even from one day to the next.  But other sports have done it.  How can a quarterback that plays on a snow covered field in sub-zero weather be compared to one across the country on the same day playing in an indoor, climate controlled stadium? Statistics!
