Coaches Classic Wrap-Up, Course Change Announced

Coen Roberts just keeps winning.

The Greer High senior posted a time of 15:42.76 to capture individual medalist in the International Boys race at the Bob Jenkins SCTCCCA Coaches Classic, part of the SCRunners XC Series presented by Go-Green Events, last weekend in Camden.

Roberts was 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Zane Jackson, a senior from Cane Bay. Marlon Beldon (Beaufort) was third, followed by Spain Vaughn (Eastside) and Zander Jeffcoat (Lexington).

"It's not nearly as fast as I thought it would be, but it's definitely a fair cross country course," Roberts said. "I was mainly just here to see the course before state, but I definitely wanted to come away with a win."

Defending Class 5A state champion Dorman finished as International Boys team champion. The Cavaliers topped Greer 117-121. T.L. Hanna (154) was third, followed by Lexington (177) and Eastside (189).

Senior Eddie Urban led the Cavaliers, finishing 10th with a time of 16:33.55. Fellow senior Carter Sexton placed 17th with a time of 16:54.89.

Riverside's Jessie Crowley won the International Girls race with a time of 19:19.88. She finished ahead of Region III rival Macey Morgan (Mauldin), who placed with a time of 19:49.06. Beaufort senior Shannon Smith was third, followed by Caroline Linen (St. Joseph's) and Charity Davies (Dorman).

Defending 5A champion Dorman took the International Girls team title with a 94-155 decision against J.L. Mann. Seneca (160) was third, followed by Hilton Head (187) and Mauldin (195).

Dorman placed four runners in the top 25. In addition to Davies, senior Katerina Hendrix was 12th, senior Page Dickey was 16th and senior Faith Nelson placed 23rd.

Mismeh Balawi took the Championship Boys individual medalist. The senior finished with a time of 16:44.30.

"We were coming off a hard week of workouts and high mileage this week, so I knew I wasn't going to run anything crazy fast," Balawi said. "The most important thing is to get ready for state in a couple of weeks."

York senior Brannon Burns was runner-up (16:52.80). West Florence senior Pearson Mixon finished third, followed by Bishop England junior Mark Richter and Byrnes senior Jonathan Roberts.

Bishop England defeated A.C. Flora 185-196 to take the Championship Boys team title. James Island (219) was third, followed by Boiling Springs (251) and Dreher (302).

Daniel senior Mari Cagle Lockhart won the Championship Girls race with a time of 19:14.34. Landrum senior Alexus Atkins (20:09.45) was runner-up. Irmo senior Katy Hall placed third, followed by Daniel junior Ally Wilson and Aiken sophomore Victoria Colon-LaBorde.

"I like this course," Cagle Lockhart said. "I loved Sandhills, so I do miss it, but I think this is a good course. I like how it's flat and has a lot of straightaways, so that's nice."

Irmo won the Championship Girls team title with a 138-189 decision against T.L. Hanna. Spartanburg (250) was third, while Daniel (257) was fourth and Byrnes (272) was fifth.

James Island coach Dave Lee was inducted into the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame prior to awards.
